£25m was purely from the pool money from the PL for prize and TV money.

So it's not just gate money is it? It's sponsorship, commercial, hospitality etc etc

Bolton came 7th with the 16th highest wage bill in the PL, we were far, far worse but then we're not a great template to use.

7th in the league and in Europe is pretty healthy in anyone's book MARSTON, the simply FACT is they picked a poor replacement and have doing doing the same ever since.

I think they were paying big money rather than long contracts - hence the "short-termism" accusation. Anelka was relatively young when he went there, so he may be an exception to that.

Can't see how the blame for their current predicament can be laid at BFS's door - they've had repeated disastrous appointments who got them relegated - once they were out of the money, they were always going to be in bother. They had enough years in the PL after him to have covered any big contracts he dished out.

Nolan came through the youth ranks and left some years ago, btw!

I can't see BFS is hugely to blame for this, but he does have a bit of the 'Redknapp' about him. Brings in excellent players who are 30/31 and convinces them to sign by offering 4 or 5 year contracts that they wouldn't get elsewhere (Anelka, Okocha, Djorkaef, Nolan etc). For the first couple of years they are great as they are still in their prime, then when they get old you are left with a team of white elephants that struggle to compete but are still being paid a kings ransom.

BFS and Redknapp both seem to have this approach to recruitment, and its no surprise to see Bolton, Blackburn, Portsmouth (to name but a few) teetering on the brink.

Let's get one thing straight to start with.

Bolton are not £180m in debt. Eddie Davis the ultimate owner has given the club by way of directors loans £172m.

Bolton's issues lie with their inability to break even or make a profit thus leading to them being unable to pay the HMRC.

However much fans would love to blame past managers for football clubs being in crappy financial positions it simply isn't the case. The problem for Bolton and many other North West clubs is saturation. Without listing them the amount of clubs in a relatively small area is huge.

When West Ham were last relegated the club still expected to sell 15-20000 season tickets for a number of the club's in question this is the capacity of their grounds. When your TV money goes from £60 - 70m down to £4.5m your going to find it hard to compete and ultimately survive.ok the parachute payments help but still only bring in another £18m so the maths aren't difficult.

Bolton, Blackburn, Cardiff, QPR, Notts Forest, Leeds and more are clients of mine so I know the ins and outside of their finances.

In what other industry do you sell something get paid 50% of its value then have to wait two years for the rest of your money. When West Ham bought Antonio there were 4 different prices quoted in the media. Which one is right?

It is slowly sorting itself out but it's 5 years from stability.

If he left all these clubs in such an excellent position then you'd have thought they'd have been good managers lining up to carry on his work and even a bad manager would've been fine with the squad he was left with.

Bit too simple to say BFS doesn't bear any responsibility for what happened to the clubs after he left; likewise, can't absolve the owners & new managers of responsibility too.

Truth is somewhere in the middle for me.

Croe 30.7m wage bill and 25m incoming is not good management. Having to rely on the gate to pick up the shortfall is asking for trouble. Whether that's part if the reason for their current predicament or not.

He was barely at Newcastle for long enough to make an impact either way.

Blackburn had a takeover by the chicken farmers who were talking of targetting the CL, chasing players like Ronaldinho. Sadly for them they appointed Steve Kean who was recommended by the dodgy agent who brokered the takeover. It all fell apart pretty quick from then.

Bolton were 43m in debt after Allardyce left and didn't start losing huge amounts until years later.

Presume like many they had a big squad of players on Premiership wages and their crowds fell off a cliff.
Think it was mentioned earlier that the debt is owed to the owner and he just wants someone to come in , pay off the tax man and take the whole thing on.
They are going back to the third division which is where they were for a long time before they had their Premiership run

Newcastle aren't now but they were over 200million in debt when Ashley took over and got relegated shortly after he left
Blackburn I have no idea of their finances but they got relegated
Bolton are completely fucked and were heavily in debt when he left got relegated
West Ham were heading one way in his last six months and we've had a drastic overhaul of the playing staff and unlike many other clubs at our level he bought heavily but sold nobody of any value

Allardyce left them in a decent position, it went wrong after that. Poor signings and lost their better players, Cahill, Anelka. Doesn't really explain how they got into so much debt though.

How do you account for the FACT then Bolton's wage bill was £30.70m (16th in the league) and finishing 7th netted them £25m from the pool money in the season BFS left Bolton??

Doesn't matter what money you spend if your manager is shit. Both clubs are paying the price
